On a recent trip to Far North Queensland, my pre-trip research led me to Origin Espresso in Port Douglas. It became my “go to” coffee shop during my brief stay in the town.
On my first visit, the place was packed. There was a big queue to order, with many already waiting for takeaways and all of the outdoor seating taken. The La Marzocco machine was earning its keep. I ordered a takeaway large oat latte and, while I wasn’t offered a choice of beans, I got the house blend – and the blend was clearly described on the counter.
It was clear from this first visit that this is a local’s favourite and I can see why. The vibe was great and the focus on serving top quality coffee was obvious. A few pastries seemed to be the only food items, so it’s all about the coffee (or tea) here. Their own small roaster was proudly on display on entering the shop.
My first coffee came out quickly considering how busy they were and was of a very high standard. It was well-bodied with lovely chocolate and caramel notes. The same standard was maintained during my other visits, when I ordered the same coffee but enjoyed it sitting out the front of the shop. Consistency is again a very good sign.
It’s great to see a place focusing on the coffee, doing their own roasting and also using locally-grown beans sometimes (according to what I was told at Coffee Works).
I highly recommend Origin in Port Douglas – it’s a busy, serious coffee shop and definitely one for the coffee lovers in this lovely town.
