I’ve been a regular at Union Kiosk in Melbourne for years. What started life as a tiny “hole in the wall” jaffle shop has become a much larger cafe space in a laneway. It has since even taken over the shop next door as well to provide additional seating.
The coffee here is consistently good. They use excellent quality Wide Open Road beans unusually twinned with No Ordinary oat milk (a Kiwi brand, made in Sweden). A large dine-in oat latte comes in a decent-sized mug with tidy latte art. It was served warm but not hot during my most recent visit on a dreary Melbourne winter afternoon.
Jaffles remain the food focus with a dizzying variety of unusual fillings on the menu. And there’s always a weekly special to keep things interesting for the regulars. They also have an increasingly good range of cakes and pastries, plus the usual coffees and teas.
Union Kiosk gets very busy from late morning to early afternoon, so expect a wait on jaffles during those periods. They’re open till 3pm – and a bit beyond usually! It’s a chilled place for a mid-afternoon coffee and yummy vegan cake (the lamington and yoyo are personal favourites!).
It’s great to see an all-vegan café in Melbourne going from strength to strength – with great coffee and food being suitable for everyone!
