Nira in Castlemaine

Nira – great coffee with a dose of history in Castlemaine

Looking for a coffee on a brief stop on a drive passing through the historic Victorian Goldfields town of Castlemaine, I stumbled across Nira.

It turned out that this “hole in the wall” style coffee shop only opened a week-or-so before my visit. Locals were clearly discovering it for the first time as I people-watched from the groovy pavement seating.

It’s obviously all about the coffee here, with the owner as barista and taking coffee very seriously. My oat latte was very smooth, chocolatey and with a little toffee in the aftertaste – thanks to Seven Seeds beans and Oatly oat milk. While Oatly was a barista oat milk favourite a few years ago, it seems much less popular now but it certainly paired very well with the Seven Seeds beans here at Nira.

Operating out of a lovely old building, known as The Hub, on the corner of Barker & Templeton Streets, Nira offers great coffee with an owner barista vibe. It’s mainly a takeaway offering but with some seating on the street. It was great to sit and experience the local support this new coffee shop is receiving while sipping on an excellent oat latte.
